The Spin Index — How We Measure Spin

What it is

The Spin Index is a 0–100 gauge of how much spin is in the wider coverage of a story — what you'd meet reading, watching, or listening almost anywhere else. It rides on every Top 10 and Below the Fold story, in four plain-language bands:

It is a reading on the weather outside — the ambient spin you'd walk into elsewhere. Inside the brief, we've already filtered it out. That's why each Unspun Story shows the drop we made: NN → ~0.

Why we can measure it — because we remove it

Most "bias meters" score from the outside, guessing at slant. Ours is different, and the difference is the whole point: the Spin Index is a byproduct of the work of unspinning the story.

To produce each Unspun Story, we do the slow work no headline does — we inventory every framing each side brings to a contested event, we strip the loaded language and scare-quotes, we mark what's genuinely disputed versus merely uncertain, and we correct the tilts that creep into how a story is set up. The Spin Index is simply the measure of what we had to clean. You can't fake it from the outside; you can only know how much spin a story carried if you're the one who removed it.

What goes into the number

The score is built from things we count while we unspin — not opinions we add afterward:

We publish these categories. We do not publish the weights that combine them — that calibration is the proprietary part, refined on real data over time.

The symmetry guarantee

Every input is lean-blind. The rules that count heat, framings, and tilts don't know — and don't care — which side a story leans. A story spun hard from the left and a story spun hard from the right, carrying the same fog, score the same.

So the Spin Index is never a verdict on who's right, and it is never a score of an outlet. It rates the coverage climate around a single story — symmetrically — and nothing else. It's a measure of noise, not of politics.

Honest about where it is

The Spin Index is live and improving. The current version orders stories reliably — the most-spun stories separate cleanly from the calm ones — while we lock the exact band cutoffs against a longer, calmer stretch of real data before we call it final. We'd rather tell you that than pretend a young measure is finished.

The Spin Index is part of The Unspun News — every side's framing, beside the documented record. We publish the spin on every story, then strip it out. You decide.
