What a Member joins

Partisan, agenda-driven media has split the country into audiences that no longer share one account of what happened — and a republic can't argue well, or govern itself, without one. Members are the people who want that shared reality back, and who would rather be part of the fix than lament the problem. They share the brief because they understand what a shared reality is worth. We're looking for a thousand of them. A legacy newsroom needs 25,000 subscribers to break even; we need a thousand Members to keep the news free of noise for everyone.

Why pay for something free

You keep our method honest and the brief free of noise. Readers funding the newsroom means we answer to you — not advertisers and the noise they bring. Advertising on a free news site is noise; Members are how we never need it, and how we keep publishing until the audience is large enough for discreet sponsorship — one labeled line a day, never in a story.

You value the news without the noise, and you can see the work. Every brief prints its receipt — the articles read, the sources, the facts checked, the biases unspun. Paying is what makes an alternative to partisan, agenda-driven media viable.
